The Full Story – behind the scenes with Tony and round pen sheepdog training
I first met sheepdog trainer and handler, Mr. Tony Rofe, when we traveled together on a trip to the European Nursery Championship in Holland. The ENC is a sheepdog trial where Border Collies from all over Europe, the UK and Ireland can go to compete. ( the requirement is that they be under 3 years old in January of that year. Tony tell us of the benifit to Round pen sheepdog training
It was a three day event and Tony and I spent a lot of time talking and discussing ideas over the weekend. I was well aware of the fact that many sheepdog trainers use a round pen for starting young dogs. Tony told me he uses a round pen and that he finds it to be an invaluable tool for training very young dogs without putting any pressure in them. Tony said that it is almost like they don’t even know that they are learning!
Over the course of our trip to the Netherlands I began to see all the benefits I could take advantage of for training my young dogs. the minute I got home I ordered myself 20 gates for my own round pen from ( www.buffalosteelproducts.com )
Shortly after I wrote a blog post here on Churchmount about round-pen training with Tony Rofe. It got some very positive feedback and quite a few questions so I decided to ask Tony of we could elaborate a little more on how useful that approach to training is. Tony agreed to make an interview where he talks to me about how he uses the round pen in training. you can hear it here on this soundcloud link.
Tony enjoys Sheepdog trialing and has judged the English National Sheepdog Trials. He also judges internationally and occasionally he can be convinced to provide a sheepdog training clinic. However, there is nothing he enjoys as much as breaking out young dogs and as a result over the years, he has put a huge number through his hands and seen all types.
The one thing that most impressed me most with Tony Rofe, is just how much he can squeeze into a training session with a young dog. He must be the most efficient young dog trainer that I can think of. Tony thinks about what he is doing before he ever puts a lead on a pup, and from the moment it goes on, that pup is in training.
For anyone thinking about running a clinic on starting and training young dogs, I couldn’t think of better communicator for both human and canine participants. Tony infects everything he does with enthusiasm.
